Issue No. 13 of NC EDGE Magazine carries readers from the striped concrete tower of the Oak Island Lighthouse at first light to the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse at the end of its long Manteo boardwalk, then out to Bodie Island's black-and-white beacon glowing under a star-filled dusk sky. In between, wild horses wander a wide Atlantic beach, a green sea turtle drags itself back into the surf, and pelicans, willets, and gulls work the shallows — a full tour of the barrier islands in soft coastal light.
